I'll let this review stand for ALL her books for now...I recognize issues I've long sighed over but really became obvious with this book. I read at least half of the series (can't remember for sure) some time ago and then later recommended them to my husband when we got our kindles. So, I bought a bunch of them for kindle. I spent a lot but I now have them all.
He didn't get to read them all--I lost him over 2 years ago. But his points now resonate with me for sure, reading the series again myself. He complained about her lengthy descriptions of unimportant things, like people, places and especially her "drives" WHEREVER she was going...Kinsey, that is. It has become more than irritating, the time the author spends on mundane stupid daily things. Her runs, her meals, her clothes and especially every street and turn she takes driving, minutely detailed descriptions of everyone she meets, minutely detailed descriptions and historical details of every town she visits, minutely detailed descriptions of houses, buildings and rooms, blah, blah, blah...wasting page after page and LOTS of my reading time. Tell me a story please. I finally did a few clippings--I got 11 pages of drivel for just 5 descriptions of people, places and drives. That's just 5 descriptions out of countless.
Then comes the issue of a change in storytelling where the author suddenly uses different times and different POVs from different characters to tell a confusing story...with too many POVS and characters included! One gets lost...when, what and who? She should have stayed with Kinsey telling her story. I DO like what I call dual time stories...searches for family secrets, etc...but it doesn't work here, it's just confusing and winds up repeating events, etc.
Then comes the pages she wastes telling what reads like EXACTLY the SAME description (paragraph/dialogue?) of something she already told...but now told by someone else? Repetitive events and scenes that instantly hit the "nerve"...I've read this already.
This story was so dragged out, I didn't even care at the end to READ the end. I already KNEW the end...long ago. It was boring, uninteresting and stupid. Boring, boring, boring, boring...will I EVER get to the end of this...and it doesn't matter anyway, why am I wasting my time!
Unfortunately, I somehow feel compelled to read the rest of them. I bought them, paid for them (too much!), and it's too late to return them. If you want to read this series, read the first few, but be warned they deteriorate badly. I'm not even sure, after all the drivel I've read and been confused by, where to tell one to stop...but fairly soon, I think. Sad to say but at least I won't have to read "Z is for ?", less time wasted?
It's also sad to realize how common this is...the downfall of an author I used to happily grab work from (that also includes exorbitant, out-of-line prices for ebooks WE DON'T EVEN OWN!, because they SELL...for all the traffic will bear?). I have to wait now, if I do decide to buy, because I refuse to be ripped off that badly...now $12-$15 for bad books with no paper, ink, printing, assembly, distribution, etc. (Publishers seem dumb enough not to realize, "best-selling" authors can be borrowed from a library, so if you want to SELL them, lower the prices!) Anyway, it seems when they sell enough, no publisher or editor seems willing or able to tell them NO. "Listen, this is boring and full of irrelevant, unnecessary BS, cut it, start over, something. Stop writing just page count...boring, irrelevant WORDS... and write a coherent, decent, tight STORY. You're NOT the only writer we could publish, you know, so work on deflating the head please."
I've begun a sad parting of ways with many: Stephen King, Diana Gabaldon, Karen White, Kate Morton, Dorothea Benton Frank, Susanna Kearsley (all now full of boring hot air and PAGES of irrelevant words and unedited ERRORS!)...any more escape me at the moment. It's sad I can't enjoy my favorite hobby of over 60 years now! It all seems to be garbage. As are most of the "new" easy, self-published authors whose literacy is questionable, stories are often lame, breathless, silly chicklit, (or scifi with no "sci" included?) with seemingly non-existent proofreading or editing. It's nearly impossible to find a decent book, let alone a GOOD one...
Update: 1-21-19 I'll probably consolidate all of this when I finally finish this series (groan), but I'll add V is for Vengeance to this now. Another boring story, not close to worthy of the 438 pages it's shown as. Especially when insulting a reader with the major boner on page 433 of referencing the D. B Cooper story. Everyone who knows anything about that true story know it's D. B. Cooper, not the "B. D. Cooper" she and her questionable editors left standing in a published work! So much for "research" by a well-known mystery writer...along with all the other errors. I cringe at the thought of finishing this series, but at this point, I'm determined.

I am amazed that Sue Grafton can weave a seemingly random turn of events into a 20 year old mystery that comes together like a Swiss watch. I really enjoy seeing Kinsey battle the mystery and also see her understanding more about her childhood and extended family. Now, I am on to the next!
I enjoy reading Sue Grafton's alphabet series. Although these books are not complex they are enjoyable. I like to read a variety of genres of books with varying complexity. If you know that these books are light-hearted before you begin, you will thoroughly enjoy them.
I don't know when I first started reading the Kinsey Millhone series, but I was hooked by A IS FOR ALIBI, and have enjoyed the subsequent series enormously. It take a lot of work and talent to write one successful book. But to have produced twenty-six really good reads is amazing.
I hadn't read Sue Grafton for a long time, but I happened to be in a doctor's office recently when I noticed U IS FOR UNDERTOW sitting on the floor under a chair. I picked it up and was immediately hooked. For those of you reading this now who want to be writers, pick up this book and read the beginning, then study it. It is a prefect example of how to hook a reader.
Now I am not really a reader of mysteries, but I left my doctor's appointment dying to know what happened next, so I immediately bought it on and read it in about a day. This novel is about a character who may be suffering from an implanted memory. Or he might be telling the truth. At the beginning, it's really not clear which, but Kinsey Millhone is determined to find out, and there is a very dramatic scene at the end in which she saves someone's life. Which I won't say more about so as not to spoil the story.
In any event, because the protagonist of this story is so unreliable, Ms. Grafton has to layer in other people's points of view, so that the reader can make sense of what is going on. Again, if you want to write yourself, study these passage carefully as they are a good example of how to use this technique successfully. (Many new writers find this hard to do right).
If you love mysteries, read this book! Five stars.
All of the Kinsey Millhone novels are good. Sue Grafton has maintained an unmatched level of quality throughout this entire series. I don't think she gets enough credit for this. In contrast, Marcia Muller's recent Sharon McCone stories have gone off the rails a bit. Bill Pronzini, my other fave private eye novelist, also seems to be getting a little tired. Grafton just keeps on chugging through the alphabet, releasing good fresh Kinsey stories. Writing novels is hard work, and writing a series of this length so well is unprecedented.
In U is For Undertow she skilfully weaves past and present, draws complex, believable characters, and builds a simple but satisfying puzzle that is complex for Kinsey to unravel. I especially appreciate Grafton's attention to detail. She gives detailed physical descriptions of her characters, and introduces them in a way that makes it easy to remember and keep track of them. I even like the turn-by-turn driving directions and other details of the character's activities, because it creates a flowing visual in my mind like a movie. Lesser authors gloss over these things so I have to go back and re-read passages to keep track of who's who, and what they did. Thumbs up for U is for Undertow, and a big thumbs up for consistently delivering the goods throughout this whole series.
