To catch a thief, a detective has himself committed to a high-class asylum
The orderlies do not need a straitjacket for Bill Crane. He is not violent, although he does have a bad habit of making embarrassing deductions about the doctors. This sarcastic, hard-drinking man has deluded himself into thinking he is Edgar Allan Poe’s great detective, C. Auguste Dupin. For this, he has been put away in a stately mental hospital on the Hudson. But Crane is not as delusional as he appears. Though he may not be Dupin, he certainly is a detective—one of the greatest, and occasionally drunkest, of them all.
Sent undercover to investigate the theft of an inmate’s fortune, Crane finds the institution not as comfortable as he had hoped. When his fellow patients start dying, he must solve the murders, or risk losing his sanity after all.

Murder in the Madhouse The Bill Crane Mysteries Book 1 edition by Jonathan Latimer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
During the 1930's Jonathan Latimer's PI Bill Crane appears in five clever and beautifully written mysteries, of which MURDER IN THE MADHOUSE is his first. Although arguably more straightforward and less elaborate than his later mysteries, this one has all the characteristics of Latimer's best work: the wry sense of humor; the well-drawn supporting characters; the poetic imagery with which he sets his scenes; the plethora of dead bodies; the heavy drinking of Crane and his associates from the agency; and his carefully-constructed mysteries.Out of print since the 1990's, all of Latimer's mysteries are worth the trouble of hunting down. Of the Crane books it's hard to pick a favorite, though I especially love THE LADY IN THE MORGUE (which, like MADHOUSE, was published in 1936) and THE DEAD DON'T CARE, his fourth book in the series; and the exquisite SINNERS AND SHROUDS from the 1950s, which has the most thrilling opening of any mystery I've ever read.
For pure pleasure you can't beat this or any of the other Crane novels. I've read each one several times. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Murder in the Madhouse The Bill Crane Mysteries Book 1 edition by Jonathan Latimer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Latimer would top this one in some of his later hard boiled detective novels, but this is still tops and quite a page turner.
If you like humor with mayhem, hardboiled and "closed community" "golden age" mysteries this melange of a funny novel is for you. PI Bill Crane goes undercover at a lunatic asylum (well, OK, it *is* a high-class joint, and they don't call the patients lunatics but "guests") to solve a theft and guard an old lady, and then people start dying.
Terse hardboiled-style writing, well done, a fast read. Seems as though the writer is quite tongue-in-cheek about the PI conventions - a running gag is that the PI gets beaten up at least once daily, and he has a great time poking fun at this premise. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but can't give 5 stars because I feel he has better stories in him.
An OK mystery (touted as being in the "hard-boiled" category, but maybe "soft-boiled," really.) Set in an asylum, at least the author didn't pin the killings on insanity. It would have been nice to have a list of characters to refer to since there were so many involved. And of course being from that time, there were some cringe-worthy references to the way the "colored" kitchen help spoke, and the hero discounts them as suspects because "they are racially incapable of such purposeful crime."
